Frequently Asked Questions
What is Redmond Select Girls Basketball (RSGB)?
Redmond Select is a non-profit organization that provides an opportunity for girls in grades 5-9 living within Lake Washington School District’s Redmond High School boundaries to develop basketball skills and play basketball in a competitive environment. Redmond Select is a participant, with other local Select programs, in the Puget Sound Travel League.
Who is eligible for Redmond Select?
Redmond Select has teams for grades 6-9, and 5th grade when there is enough interest demonstrated at Open Gyms. Players must live within Lake Washington School District’s Redmond High School boundaries. You can find out your home High School at the LWSD site: http://busroutes.lwsd.org/elinkrp/ (login as “guest” and enter your address and select grade 12). On an exception basis, players may seek a variance into the program per Puget Sound Travel League requirements. Very few, if any, variances are granted by the League.
When are Tryouts?
Tryouts are held in September. No pre-registration is required but participation in Open Gyms prior to tryouts is encouraged.
What are Open Gyms?
Open Gyms are offered to all girls entering grades 4-9 living within the Redmond High School Boundaries, and are typically held Monday & Wednesday evenings in the Spring (March-May) and late Summer (August-September). Open Gyms are an opportunity for girls to develop individual skills in the off-season, prepare for Fall Try-outs, and experience the RSGB program. All Open Gyms are supervised by RSGB coaches and include a mix of individual drills and scrimmage.
What is the Game Schedule?
Redmond Select participates in the Puget Sound Travel League, which includes teams from most local High Schools boundaries. Approximately 16 games are scheduled weekends (typically one game Saturday and one game Sunday) December-February.
Redmond Select teams also participate in 2-3 pre-season tournaments in November (including Thanksgiving weekend) as well as 2-4 tournaments during the regular season. All tournaments are local except a year-end travel Tournament to Wenatchee.
What is the Practice Schedule?
Teams practice October through end-of-season, 1-3 times per week based on gym availability. Practice times and day-of-week may vary week-to-week. Efforts will be made to schedule practices and communicate changes in a timely manner.
What level of commitment is required?
Expectations are that Redmond Select Basketball will be players’ #1 sport priority in the regular season (Dec-Feb). Redmond Select also recognizes that many of our players are multi-sport athletes participating in fall sports whose schedules compete with the pre-season (Oct-Nov) practice and tournament schedule. We understand that Players need to finish up their commitment to these fall sports. Players will not be penalized for missing practices and games in Oct-Nov. However players attending on a regular basis will probably be better prepared for early season games.
Players anticipating more than a few absences from practices and games during pre-season and regular season must identify potential conflicts during try-outs.
How much does Redmond Select cost?
Redmond Select fees vary by team based on the team’s tournament and practice schedule & number of players, but will typically run between $300 and $400 per player (excluding travel costs). There are several opportunities for fundraising activities to help offset team and individual costs. Scholarship funds are available from Redmond Select and may be requested through the League President.
